About Us
Comet Mitigation was founded by Julia Milan, a private investigator and sentencing mitigation specialist with roots in complex federal criminal defense. Julia began her career as a CJA paralegal on high-stakes RICO cases in the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York, and has since built a national practice spanning state and federal criminal defense, civil litigation, and habeas corpus matters.
Her work bridges investigation, mitigation, and trial strategy combining rigorous fact-finding with narrative precision and psychological insight. But what sets Julia apart isn't just her technical range. It's her ability to hold a case together at the human level.
She brings particular expertise working with defendants navigating serious mental health and neurodevelopmental challenges — and understands how to identify and work around the patterns these conditions create: the gaps in communication, the executive dysfunction, the places where critical information gets lost between a client and their attorney. She fills those gaps.
How We Work
Comet Mitigation operates as a boutique practice supported by a trusted network of specialists. All work is directed, reviewed, and quality-controlled by Julia to ensure consistency, accuracy, and strategic alignment across every case.
We integrate investigation, case development, client engagement, and mitigation into one coordinated framework — strengthening overall defense strategy. No matter the jurisdiction or disposition, we bring the same core values to every matter: curiosity, integrity, and strategic empathy.
What Sets Us Apart
Attorneys describe Julia as the connective tissue of a defense team — the person who keeps the client engaged, keeps the case moving, and ensures nothing falls through the cracks. She has a rare ability to translate between the world of the defendant and the world of the courtroom, helping both sides understand each other clearly and work together effectively. She is calm under pressure, perceptive about human behavior, and deeply committed to the people she works with.
Comet Mitigation's work has contributed to dismissals, not-guilty verdicts, and substantially reduced sentences at both state and federal levels.
