Description:

Attorney-Retained Engagement

Sentencing advocacy is strongest when mitigation is developed early and intentionally — not assembled at the final stage.

This structured engagement supports defense teams in identifying, documenting, and integrating mitigation themes during plea negotiations and sentencing preparation. Early involvement allows mitigation to influence case posture rather than simply respond to it.

Scope of engagement may include:

• Comprehensive life-history investigation and chronology development
• In-person jail visits, detention facility meetings, and community-based client interviews
• Structured client interviews via phone or secure Zoom when appropriate
• Ongoing relationship development to support trust and narrative accuracy
• Identification and documentation of mitigating factors
• Family outreach and coordination regarding letters and supporting materials
• Narrative development for sentencing memoranda
• Allocution preparation
• Consultation with counsel regarding mitigation framing and strategic integration

Effective mitigation depends on trust, continuity, and time. Meaningful client relationships — particularly with incarcerated clients — cannot be rushed. Early engagement consistently produces stronger, more cohesive sentencing advocacy.

This service is conducted in coordination with defense counsel and supports, but does not direct, legal strategy.
